M is for Magic – the trick

If you’re reading this, you want to know how the magic trick works…if that’s not why you’re here, look away now!!

If you’re still here, I’m assuming you’re dying to understand the magic. Well, I’ll let you into a secret – this isn’t a magic trick. It’s a maths trick!

So how does it work?

The audience picks a card and the number value is used throughout the trick.

  1. Double the value.
  2. Then add three.
  3. Multiply by five.
  4. Finally, add the value of the suit.

The audience then submits the number, using a parameter.

The parameter is then used in two simple formulae to get the card chosen at the start of the trick.

To find the suit of the card, subtract 15 from the value of the parameter. The rightmost digit of the answer gives us the suit.
The remaining digit(s) give us the card number. This equation subtracts 15 from the parameter and takes the leftmost digit(s) to give us the number.

It’s as simple as that! And it works every time!

Next time you want to impress a crowd, pull out a deck of cards and blow them away with your predictions!
